5 Things to Consider When Having Your Pet At Your Wedding
First and foremost, use the registry -- The registry is a list of items the couple actually wants. While you might have an affinity for fancy bird houses, the latest new blender, or a brand of luggage, the couple has provided you with a list of exactly what they want. Why would you not use it to your advantage?
Sometimes people feel going off the registry is impersonal. I'd argue, what's more personal than a gift that you *know* the couple will like? They took the time to make a registry, you should use it to their, and your, advantage.
When going off the registry, think about the couple and their living situation. Do they already live together? If so, they probably have everything they need for their home. Consider an experience gift like a cooking class, a restaurant gift card, or a gift card to their favorite home store so they can choose whatever they'd like.
If you prefer to stay clear of physical items all together, everyone likes a cash gift. The real question is, how much cash is appropriate? Around a $100 per person is a safe average. If the wedding is more casual, or you are not well acquainted with the couple, you could consider less. If the wedding is formal and you are close to the couple, a higher amount would also be reasonable.
Per the old school rules, you have up to a year after the wedding to send the couple a gift. Today, most people give gifts prior to the wedding day, and even fewer show up to the wedding with a gift in hand. Sending a gift ahead of time directly to the couple is easier for everyone. But if you really can't figure out a gift beforehand, it's ok to take a few weeks or months even to figure out the perfect gift.
Personally, my most used wedding gift was my kitchen aid mixer. I use it almost daily and love knowing it came from a loving family member! My favorite gift was a custom work of art in the style of a vintage poster, depicting my husband and I on our wedding day. It was a risky gift to give, but it paid off because both my husband and I love it!
When giving a meaningful gift, the thought counts, but not more than what the couple actually wants. Whether you use the registry or not, give your gift with love and the couple will (hopefully) get the vibes!
